Buhl Planetarium / Science Center: Recent Deaths

Over the last month, there were three losses to the Buhl Planetarium and Institute of Popular Science / Buhl Science Center family.

Former Buhl Science Center and Carnegie Science Center staff member Robert Hertrick passed-away unexpectedly on May 10, at the age of 60. Bob started volunteering at Buhl in the mid-1980s and was hired as a Floor Aide in November of 1988. Beginning in August of 1990, he also was a Tour Guide on the USS Requin Submarine. He continued working, particularly on the submarine, after the opening of The Carnegie Science Center in October of 1991. Layoffs (reported in the Pittsburgh City Paper) resulted in Bob leaving The Carnegie Science Center in June of 2002.

Former Buhl Science Center Reservationist Rose Anne Needham reports that Buhl volunteer Paul McCaffery passed-away on May 23, at the age of 92. He started volunteering at the Buhl Science Center in the late 1980s and continued volunteering at The Carnegie Science Center, for a total of 23 years of volunteering !

David Henderson, husband of former Buhl Public Relations Director Caroljo Lee Henderson, passed-away June 3, at age 93. Jo and David had been married 20 years, following Jo's retirement from the Buhl Science Center. David had been preceded in death by his first wife, Janet.

Special Note: This David Henderson should not be confused with another David Henderson, who served as President of the Buhl Foundation from 1968 to 1982. Dr. David Henderson died in February of 1997 at the age of 80.
