Astronomical Calendar: 2014 February

File:Groundhogday2005.jpg

Each year on February 2 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, the Groundhog Punxsutawney Phil determines whether Spring-type weather will come early or if Winter will continue until the Vernal Equinox. Derived from the Pagan festival Imbolc which was originally celebrated February 1 - 2 as the middle of Winter, the ancients used this mid-Winter festival to look forward to the more temperate weather of Spring. With our modern calendar, the actual Winter cross-quarter day in 2014 is on February 4. (Image Source: Wikipedia.org )
