Strong Solar Flare Erupted Thur.; Will Impact Earth on Weekend

Sunspot erupts with strong solar flare and will impact Earth in next few days (Photos)

Active sunspot AR1719, which is located near the center of the solar disk, erupted on early Thursday at 0716 UTC, producing a strong M6-class solar flare. A coronal mass ejection (CME) also occurred as a result of the eruption, and given its trajectory, model runs suggest it will pass Earth, causing what forecasters now expect to be G2 (Moderate) geomagnetic storm.

A G2 moderate geomagnetic storm can cause high-latitude power systems to experience voltage alarms and long-duration storms may cause transformer damage. HF radio propagation can fade at higher latitudes, and aurora has been seen as low as New York and Idaho (typically 55° geomagnetic latitude).
