The Chronicle accused the president of having an attitude toward the
interests of Texas that “occasionally bordered on contempt.” As an
example, the newspaper mentioned the decision not to display a space
shuttle orbiter at Space Center Houston near the Johnson Spaceflight
Center, even though all of the shuttle astronauts trained in Houston and
all of the shuttle flights were controlled from Mission Control at JSC.
The Chronicle called this, “The hurtful symbol of this attitude of
insensitivity to Texans' feelings was the administration's choice to
deny Space City's bid to become home to one of the retired space
shuttles.” At the time of the decision, many Texas politicians noted
that California and New York, safe Democratic states, and Florida, a
swing state, were getting shuttles. Texas is a reliable Republican
state.
The Houston Chronicle also offered an indictment of Obama’s space policy.
“The other launch pad ignored by President Obama is the literal one - NASA, and specifically the Johnson Space Center.
